Breaking the Ice :)

Greetings to AP Dr. Izaham Shah Ismail, our TSL 641 lecturer and all my blog readers. As an introduction, I think it's better for me to introduce myself. The name NOORSHILA AZURA BINTI ROSLI was given to me on the 19th of November, 1990.  I am the first of two female siblings. Yes, both are girls; my little sis and I. She is now 14 years old and also an avid Facebook user :P

Talking about computer literacy.. hm.. I personally think that I'm not good in utilizing computers. I don't like dealing with gadgets. I find it lifeless. So many hours are spent in front of machines - less interaction with other human beings. Of course, I will not deny that technology provides vast benefits for mankinds. Hence, I perceive my ability in using computers is limited to the skills necessary for me to complete my assignments. 5 years ago, I took a 3-month course and learnt how to use Microsoft Office, basics in surfing the Net and a little bit about developing a website (something like HTML skeleton and such - but to tell the truth - if you ask me to develop my own website now, I can't; the knowledge has just faded out of my memory.. How sad). I found the course useful to help me with my studies later on, especially in using Microsoft Words and Excel.

I never undergo online learning experience. I am interested to know if it's interesting and could make a difference as compared to the traditional way of learning. In terms of language learning, I see the presence of advanced technology as a unique approach for students to practice their language skills. Children in modern societies nowadays have little time to spend for outdoor activities. This decreases their daily interpersonal interactions. In Malaysian context, the situation becomes tougher because less opportunity is promoted for students to use English Language in a more casual basis. Perhaps by making use of technology, Malaysian students can get more chances to practice their knowledge. Less pressure is experienced; it's not like they have to stand in front of the class to say even a word in the language, or even to read English poems! In other words, computers may become a medium for language teachers to scaffold their students and enhance their confidence in the process of acquiring the language. Apart from that, advanced learners will get the benefit too. They can be taught to practise autonomous learning through input searching and information retrieving.

I will be having my practicum next semester. Despite of my negative attitude towards technology, I admit that I need to enrich myself with some knowledge in this area to fulfill my future students' needs. Therefore I feel really grateful if I can learn something new. Perhaps I can use this knowledge in the future to attract my students' attention. As to kill two birds with one stone, I hope I can be a language teacher who can educate her students to be creative in using computers as the means of improving their English commands, as well as to nurture good values as wise technology users.

*ACADEMIC EXERCISE! It's the subject of concern for most of us. I have undergone hard times of choosing the most suitable topic for my AE and I finally decide to focus on vocabulary learning strategies. This is the topic I am interested at and I am confident that with the guidance from my supervisor, Madam Leele Susana Jamian, I will be able to understand fundamental concepts and methods to conduct a proper research and produce good findings, insya Allah. I am now still doing the introductory part of my research; and as the target participants would be the Asasi students, I am hoping to complete a draft of my first, second and third chapter by this December. Hence, I will need to wait until the participants to come back from their semester break, so the process of collecting data can be conducted. I am also planning to execute the process of tabulating and inferring data beginning from January 2013. I know that sometimes due dates and stress are useful to wake me up, so I am challenging myself to wrap up all the findings at least two months before I manage to complete my practicum. In relation to this personal mission, I promise to work hard and conduct the research meticulously. In a long run, I hope that this task will teach me to be an effective future educator.
